  • I feel like a posses a limited musical background. Besides taking a piano keyboarding class in junior high, I don't have much formal experience with instruments. I do often finger tap, beat box, and sing in the shower.

I enjoy a wide variety of musical genres. I really don't ever make the opportunity to listen to classical music. When looking through my options for electives this one jumped out at me as something that I could enjoy and appreciate. The music I usually listen to in my free time is heavy metal and electronic music, which electronic music in itself has many sub genres. Electronic music often reminds me of orchestra music due to the layering of the different sounds working together to make an individual piece. So electronic music, to me, seems  to be the bridge from what I normally listen to that will allow me to really appreciate the knowledge gained in this class.

My family is not notorious for their musical talents. My sister knows how to beat on a guitar and act like she knows what she's doing, but besides that I really can't think of anyone else in the family that is into playing instruments. However, I do have friends that are very into music and playing instruments. If you stop by their house or go to one of their parties you are more than likely going to witness a jam session. Which I always enjoy, because I get to beat on the drums every once and a while. If there is any instrument that I have ever wanted to learn, it would be the drums. Something about really takes me. It could be due to the facts that a drummer sets the beat for the music and I typically bob my head to that down beat.

You know, while sitting here writing this, I remembered that I often relate my computer keyboard to an instrument. You definitely get a rhythm when typing. Like an instrument there is a particular method to typing and to develop your skills it takes a similar dedication.

My hopes for the class are to take in a bit of the local culture by enjoying and learning about classical music. With this knowledge I expect to find other like minded individuals, resulting in new friends and relationships.

One thing I fear for the class is that the work load will be disproportionate to the number of credits. This initial entry jumps out at me as something with a lot of filler.  Another fear would be high expectations combined with trivial grading. Looking at the point system for assignments I can see it leaves a lot of room for the professor to remove points for more things. I guess those are just things I fear for any class. This is my last quarter before I complete my undergraduate degree. I'm looking to get out of here with a minimal amount of work, because I have more than just academics to deal with as I prepare for moving into the industry with a degree in computer science.
